IPTV vs Streaming - What's the Difference

TV is a staple of our modern life, but did you know that there are actually multiple kinds of TV? One of the most common today are streaming programs. Netflix and Disney+ bring content at the push of a button. While these programs are very popular, another similar option exists: Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). Though they may be similar, it’s important to know the distinctions between the two.

First, let’s call streaming services by their real name, Over-the-Top programs (OTT). The main thing that sets OTT apart is the way programs are delivered to your device. OTT runs through a regular internet connection. This is why you can stream programs like Netflix almost anywhere with an internet connection, because it doesn’t require any specific one.

IPTV is also a TV service that is distributed to your devices through the internet, but there’s one crucial difference. While OTT is able to be distributed across any internet connection, IPTV is only moved through a private, dedicated network. While they still don’t need cable or a satellite, IPTV typically goes through a set-top box (STB) to ensure a private connection. IPTV is typically more expensive but can also offer more content and a higher quality performance.
